It shouldn't be a surprise that a city known for its Southern charm would offer great restaurants for noshing on one of the South's most beloved dishes: chicken and waffles. Because the spicy-sweet combo works for day and night, you'll find it on brunch, dinner and even late-night menus in Washington, D.C., for those times when you can't choose between savory and sweet, breakfast or dinner. "Not only can you get chicken and waffles, but you can get chicken with a side order of chicken with your waffles; chicken squared, if you will," says Citysearch Dictator Jacob P. of this U Street soul food spot, which serves up the dish late into the night.

Celeb chef Art Smith proved on "Top Chef Masters" that he's mastered the art of Southern cooking, and his skills are best on display during weekend brunch, when friend chicken and waffles are served with maple syrup and sausage gravy.
