Other reviewer's hit it on the head. It's all an old fashioned hardware store could be. They even have some items that other stores don't have and sometimes have better prices. Today I got a valve for $22....that was after getting quoted $59 at one of the larger plumbing stores, HomeDepot not having them and having another large store laugh at me when I said I could get it for under $30. Parking is sometimes difficult, but a 5 minute wait and a drive around the block will resolve that issue. The staff is very knowledgeable...not the 22 y/o college kid who'd rather be some place else or the 50y/o clerk who makes you feel like a dummy for asking questions. I honestly recommend calling this store before you go to a larger chain. You'll find it convenient, close and well stocked.

I have lived walking distance from Fragers for the last 7 years, and have shopped there at least 2 times per month since buying my house. Their staff is always knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I have attempted all kinds of home repair and building projects over the years and can count on being able to walk in any time of day and have a friendly, helpful staff person answer my questions and help me think through my project. They go above and beyond in trying to help customers find what they need and get the job done right. The place is tightly packed with stuff from basement to the second floor, but it's well organized and there is always someone available to help. I've been shocked at the variety of things I've been able to find there. For the past 7 years, I've had almost no reason to go to a big box hardware store. The very few times I have gone to Home Depot, I've been shocked at how completely incompetent the staff is and how impossible it is (and time consuming) to find anything I need. Fragers is one of the few stores I know of that can offer the variety of things a big box store offers, but with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff, the feel of a family-run small store, a great return policy (always take things back with no question) and the ability to have a house account, so I can run all of my errands without even bringing my purse along.

Everything that was excellent about the old-fashioned hardware store. It is packed to the gills and can feel claustrophobic, but it is amazing what can be found there. A perfect place for odds-and-ends hunting, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Much more fun than those other, big-box retail guys.
