Amazing local gem. There is plenty to love about P&P but my two favorite things are: attending book readings and hanging out in the cafe downstairs. The readings can be fiery or polite or in-your-face provocative. Amazing coffee and great local presence makes this place an awesome DC hangout.
Citysearch Editorial Review. Don't be fooled by the name: Politics & Prose is more than a specialty shop for Hill folk and fiction lovers. It offers both, but this smart, well-organized bookstore north of Van Ness metro also features extensive biography and history sections, a massive selection of children's books (the result of a 1999 merger with the Cheshire Cat of Chevy Chase), and a cafe perfect for reading the paper or writing. Owners Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade compare their store to Garrison Keillor's fictionalized Lake Wobegone: all of its patrons are above average. That goes for employees, too--"Staff Recommendations" tags on the shelves can be trusted, and the notoriously well-read sales associates will make personalized recommendations.
