Relocated from M Street, the Madhatter has classed up and actualized the Alice in Wonderland theme in a spacious, two-level Connecticut Avenue location. The large, clown-like figurine of Alice's Mad Hatter in the restaurant's bay window is a hint of what's to come. Inside, tables are set with miniature white porcelain teacups and saucers and diners sip on apricot-lemon tea and an "edible hello" such as cookies or coffee cake while waiting for themed cocktails or food. A selection of tea sandwiches, burgers, dogs, and heartier fare is available in addition to salads from the "Wonderland Garden." Ornate drawings of the tale's famous characters flank the high-ceilinged dining room, while a separate upside-down room--complete with an entire picnic hanging from a checked tablecloth on the ceiling--provides space for group functions.
