Worth the hype.
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had was at Komi. I had called 3 weeks in advance to make a reservation to celebrate my cousin's graduation, however, they were completely booked. I didn't realize you have to call exactly one month in advance to land a reservation or else cross your fingers that you'll get off the waitlist. I ended up putting my name on the waitlist and SQUEALED when they called to tell me that a table opened up for 7pm the next evening.
The setting was very intimate as there were no more than 25 diners at a time and the decor was pretty simple. Some diners were dressed casually in jeans while other couples were dressed to the nines. There is only one menu consisting of about 10 or so small plates, a pasta dish, main course, a cheese course, and 3 or 4 dessert courses.
Much to my delight, the beginning of the meal was very seafoodie (excuse my lack for a better word). Memorable small plates were the sashimi trio, a freshly warm bite-sized brioche bun topped with creme fraiche and salmon caviar, pork belly skewers, and grilled octupus, which had a great char. The pasta dish wasn't mindblowing but the noodles did taste very fresh. The main dish was a huge plate of goat to share with warm pita and a side of condiments. I had never had goat before but was pleasantly surprised at how tender and flavorful it was. By this point we were stuffed but of course we had to make room for dessert. The dessert that stood out was the deconstructed "frozen baklava" that came with walnut ice cream.
The service was excellent. We must have had about 6 or 7 different servers who were very friendly and knowledgeable about the courses. At $125 per person, Komi is by no means a cheap eat, but it is a "value" for all the food you get compared to other fancy tasting rooms in the area. This is the place to go if you have a special occasion, want an intimate dinner, or simply just love food.
