"Meh" Mexican Food.
DC is unfortunately lacking when it comes to good Tex-Mex, so Alero may be where it's at by default. I have eaten here a few times because I was specifically craving Tex-Mex and had no other options available. Opt for classic Mexican dishes here but avoid their brunch buffet - it's overpriced and not very good quality. Drinks are pretty good, however, as Alero has a well-stocked bar and makes quality margaritas. But if you're looking for quality food as well, come with low expectations or try elsewhere.

Citysearch Editorial Review.
This Mexican restaurant at the corner of 13th and U streets is a popular pre-show dinner spot for patrons headed to catch live music at the nearby 9:30 Club and Black Cat. Less then a block from the U Street Metro, it's a popular spot for U Street visitors as well as locals. The neon-lit bar and couched lounge provide a popular spot for grabbing cheap margaritas--such as the matrimonial, a swirled blend of two frozen flavors--during happy hour six days a week, while the large dining room--with its warm red walls and candle at each table--is a good spot for a leisurely meal. The outdoor patio is also a popular spot (it's heated in the winter and covered with umbrellas during the summer), though part of the fun includes the larger-than-life acrylic and canvas paintings of pop culture icons in the main dining room; painted by a local artist, they always provide something to talk about over that basket of chips.
