It's not often that a sports bar is decorated with figurines of mermaids, full-size portraits of Boston socialites and a spinning disco ball. But Nellie's is one such combination of kitsch and sports passion: a place where patrons can grab a pint, watch the game and eat a mini cupcake under 18th century light fixtures from Baltimore's Penn Station. The gay-friendly sports bar is about pride in more ways than one: named after one of the owner's great-great grandmothers, the bar has its own slogan ("Stay Nellie!"), lingo (Nellie-felly: "A majorly hot boy I met at Nellie's") and fan meter ("How Nellie Are You?") and hosts the capital Pride parade's beer garden in addition to sponsoring local amateur sports teams.
