Hemingway-inspired cocktail bar. Mike Benson saw the crowds flocking to his bar St. Ex--now a neighborhood staple--and decided there was a market on 14th Street for another watering hole. Bar Pilar, named after Hemingway's boat and a character in "For Whom the Bell Tolls," is a welcome neighbor to St. Ex and offers a more relaxed place to throw your anchor and mingle with the civilized and friendly crowd. The fishing-themed bar features an impressive number of beers on draft, and the cocktails are inspired and change seasonally. Within the bar's golden walls, sipping a sweet martini, customers can escape U Street and let out a deep breath.
