Quality Cupcakes in Penn Quarter. Red Velvet is my go-to for cupcakes when I'm craving something sweet and on the go, especially if I'm in the Penn Quarter-Chinatown area. The cupcakes are solid; the cake is always moist and I like that they don't only use buttercream or royal icing like many cupcakeries. Their chocolate cupcake with chocolate ganache icing is one of my favorites (being a huge chocoholic), and their red velvet is very good (although I like more of a cream cheesey-icing rather than twinges of cream cheese in the icing). I'm not a vegan but I've tried their Black Velvet vegan chocolate cupcake and it's excellent: the cake doesn't taste any different than regular cupcakes and the icing is perfectly sweet and creamy.
Best Cupcakes in Penn Quarter. I have always loved desserts but had never realized how much I could crave a cupcake. Upon starting to work in the city I was first introduced to Red Velvet during a birthday celebration at work. Little did I know it was their favorite place to purchase cupcakes. After having the opportunity to sample about 6 different kinds of their cupcakes I knew I was in love! The red velvet still is a favorite of mine, but I recommend running (DON'T Walk) to Red Velvet to sample a few of their delectable treats. You cannot go wrong with which ever flavor you choose. Don't try just one...get a few to share with your friends.
Citysearch Editorial Review. Chinatown's Red Velvet Cupcakery sells 12 different flavors of "couture" cupcakes daily; expect a frequently changing seasonal flavor in addition to standbys such as Morning Call (espresso-infused chocolate cake with coffee buttercream frosting), B-Day (almond-scented butter cake with milk chocolate ganache) and of course the Southern Bell, red velvet cake with whipped cream cheese frosting.
