For some of D.C.'s best tacos on the cheap, Columbia Heights residents know that Taqueria Distrito Federal is a gem off the beaten path. Tacos come in all varieties here; the chosen meat--including beef, pork, chorizo, beef, chicken, short ribs or, for the more adventurous, beef tongue, goat or tripe--comes on a fresh corn tortilla with traditional trimmings such as sliced cucumber, radishes, lime, avocado and nopal. The red and green salsas pack in bold flavors, but regulars favor the salsa de aguacate--the restaurant's tasty avocado sauce. On the weekends, the Tacqueria also serves up shrimp cocktail, pork and chicken tamales, and pozole, a chunky Mexican soup with pork and hominy. Drinks are also traditional--choose an agua fresca, Jarritos (a Mexican soft drink) or the holy grail of sodas: Coca-Cola imported from Mexico and made with real sugar cane.
