Consciously sourced ingredients elevates this cuisine to virtuous. This is the kind of place that we want to support and see thrive. Delicious comfort food with a modern twist ensures a happy belly. Also knock out cocktails and a great price point almost too good to believe in down town DC

Sustainable Food at a decent price – Let me start off by saying I am so happy that I have now found my absolute favorite restaurant in D.C. When dinning for my birthday recently I decided to try Founding Farmers after hearing rave reviews from everyone that has dined there including my colorist and my best friend. Whats the worst thing about the place? Deciding what to get! If money was no object and my stomach were as large as Africa I would order everything off the menu, but after a fun chat with my amazing waitress I ordered some of her favorite items, even trying chicken and waffles for the first time. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed!! Even better is the food is locally grown and the cocktails are made by hand. I can't wait to go back and try out another entree off the menu and a new drink from the bar. I know you might be stuffed after dinner, drinks and appetizers (yes, you have to order appetizers, maybe even a few..they are so good!) but do not leave out dessert. Share a piece of the red velvet cake at your table and you will not regret it! Enjoy your trip to Founding Farmers, you will not be disappointed.

Greatness in sustainable form – The menu is very diverse, and of all the things we ordered at the table, 99% of it exceeded our expectations. I especially like the corn bread appetizer that contained pieces of corn in it, and my entree of the slow braised beef short ribs (one massive chuck of meat!). My buddy got the Lemon Diver Scallops and they were they large sea scallops, not the tiny bay ones. The prices were...well, pricey, but I think based the portion sizes and quality it was worth it!

The one downside of the night was the strawberry shortcake dessert. I love desserts, and am rarely disappointed, but I was by this one. It was more of a strawberry jam over a nonexistent cake, with a large dollop of ice cream and some pastry sticks sprinkled on top. For a place that's reputation is "fresh" and "organic," I was not impressed by the use of the strawberry jam, which is often associated with "preserved" (i.e. old).

Citysearch Editorial Review – The name says it all. Just blocks from the house of our founders (the White House, that is), sits this modern-day approximation of farmhouse. The downstairs dining room has the expected rough-hewn farm tables but also cheeky touches like bird-shaped pendant lights and cloud fixtures. Things get cozy upstairs at round booths that work well for birthday parties or a big night out. On either floor, daylight pours in through two-story windows, setting a fresh mood for the restaurant’s made-from-scratch food. Just be sure to call ahead—the certified green restaurant’s sustainable, seasonal fare is popular among college students and young professional, especially brunch. What keeps them coming back? Waiters say it’s the chicken and waffles, but house-made potato chips and a smorgasbord of salads can’t hurt.

Best in Comfort Food – Founding Farmers is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in DC, their food being the major part of their winning equation, plus a unique and extensive drink menu as well as great service with every visit.

My staple here is the Southern Pan-fried Chicken, which comes with just-crispy-enough waffes, a vegetable of the day, macaroni and cheese, a sauce for the chicken and maple syrup. It's practically a buffet on a plate but the seasoning on the chicken and their creamy mac n' cheese just makes you eat until the plate is licked clean.

I love their desserts, like their rich Red Velvet Cake (served with Vanilla ice cream - awesome combo). However, I was disappointed in their to-go cookies. For $5, you get 6 fairly large cookies, but they weren't any better quality than what I can get at Safeway. I'll stick to ordering dessert in-house from now on.

FF is great for just drinks and apps too - I've had their apple, brie and onion jam flatbread to share and it is wonderfully light yet flavorful, and I love that I can easily get a Pimm's Cup or a drunken Arnold Palmer here. I'd definitely suggest FF for casual dinners with friends or a date.
