D.C.'s 14th Street is sometimes seen as the area's design district, and this upscale furniture chain is the cornerstone. With a modern, clean-lined aesthetic perfect for urban dwellers with an eye on design, the showroom sprawls across 36,000 feet over four levels with floor-to-ceiling windows. The R.L. Taylor Building in which it is housed dates back to 1919 and was originally a Ford Motors showroom where Model T cars were assembled and sold. Continuing in that tradition, Room & Board's offerings--which span from bedding to patio furniture--are 80 percent American-made.
