Great hard to find beer selection. Some reviews have been complaining that CommonWealth Gastro Pub is expensive, but it has to be kept in perspective. Most of the beers are unavailable for purchase elsewhere and so they are pricey! But for beer connoisseurs (the foodies of the booze world), CommonWealth will not disappoint. Also, the food is delish! I had lobster cakes and fries - both which were amazingly good. This is a true Gastro Pub styled after those in London. Also, servers are trained and very knowledgeable about all of the beer selections. Ambiance is fun with muted lighting and lots of seating that cut down on a long wait.
An english pub?. shows Lord of the Rings instead of a huge English Premier Leage soccer game? sad.
Citysearch Editorial Review. This self-proclaimed "people's gastropub" in Columbia Heights comes from D.C. restaurateurs Jamie Leeds and Sandy Lewis, owners of Hank's Oyster Bar. Taking a farm-to-table approach, it succeeds in making "boring" British cuisine anything but. Using local ingredients from small farmers, butchers and artesian cheesemakers adds a detailed kick to the usual grub. Anglo standards include bangers and mash, Smithwick's beer-battered fish and chips, plowman's salad and shepherd's pie. There's nontraditional fare too--such as ceviche, duck confit risotto and grilled squid. Its offerings change regularly, including a rotating "uncommon burger," as does the pub's beer selection, which ranges from UK imports to cask ales (two are always on tap).
