Yum-pockets. “OMG Julia’s Empanadas.” This is what I hear at least once every time I’m here. Given, it is usually late, and people tend to get easily excited and emotional at that hour, but the tiny store serving pockets of pure goodness deserves the multitude of OMGs. Julia couldn’t have chosen a better location to dole out up her baked puff pastries. The menu is small, but clearly well thought-out; each empanada carries unique and complementary flavors. And for $4, they are a steal, especially for the overstuffed Bolivian-inspired salteña, a hearty meal unto itself – chicken, potatoes, peas, hard-boiled egg, raisins, olives, and onions.

Perfect Portable Patties. I'm a huge empanada fan so it's hard for me to say anything bad about them, but really, Julia's makes them well. They've got a couple varieties of their Latin-influenced versions of the meat-and-veggie-filled-pillows of dough, from Chilean or Jamaican (like jerk meat). I love the turkey empanada with caramelized spring onions - it's both sweet and savory. Their dessert empanadas are great as well; the strawberry and cream cheese brings me back to my childhood days eating toaster strudels (but trust me, these are way better). They offer very cheap deals like 1 savory, 1 sweet and 1 soda for less than $6, which are perfect for lunch or dinner.

Quick & savory. I stumbled upon Julia's after a night at Lucky Bar - we were searching for some pizza but opted for empanadas instead. Thank goodness we did! We had two of their classic selections (Chilean Style Beef and the Jamaican). Delish! The price is right (a little over $3), and it might just trump pizza as the new late-night go to!

Tasty in perfect pocket form. Julia's is muy fantastico studentes. A huge variety of empanadas with a vast array of fillings will be sure to please even the pickiest in your crew and always a safe place to go and grab a cheap bite with a group of diverse eaters! I tend to stick with the daily special as it is seldom anything but the best and utilizing the most fresh and special of ingredients!
